What is Reflexology
The ancient art of reflexology dates back thousands of years and is often mistaken for a foot massage. However this non invasive, specialized technique incorporates a system involving the physical act of applying pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques to relieve tension and treat illness.
The practitioner uses their hands to stimulate a corresponding body part or function on the foot or hands, based on the theory of each foot relating to a particular side of the body which is divided into zones. The zones contain reflex areas which reflect and relate to the internal.
The foot is a very complex structure consisting of 26 bones with tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and over 7000 nerve endings. Through skillful manipulation of the nerve endings and reflexes a reflexologist can help to unblock the flow of energy in the internal organs and rebalance entire systems.
It is particularly useful for stress related conditions as it helps to discharge the negative effects of stress and stimulate the body’s own healing. It can be used to aid recovery from illness but also to maintain health as it is not necessary to suffer from a particular symptom to benefit from this treatment.

Who can have Reflexology and what does it treat?
Reflexology can be used by everyone from very young babies to the elderly to help restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work on restoring its own natural balance which helps to heal the whole person, not just the prevailing symptoms. A small number of medical conditions are not suitable for reflexology treatment so it is important that a full and confidential medical history is taken.
Common acute and chronic conditions have been effectively treated by reflexology such as Stress related conditions, Digestive Disorders, Urinary Disorders, Gynaecological Conditions, Sleep disorders, physical conditions or injuries and it is also a very integral part of oncology treatment.

What can I expect from a treatment?
After an initial consultation the patient will lie on a comfortable couch with shoes and socks removed. The atmosphere will be one of quiet and calm tranquility. The practitioner starts by wrapping the feet in warm towels and gently introduces a relaxation technique to each foot systematically which encourages the patient to relax and unwind and also promotes circulation. Then each reflex point on both feet will be activated in sequence. If a part of the body is not working at its best, a sensitive area may be found in the corresponding part of the foot when pressure is applied. By working over these sensitive reflexes during treatment the tenderness, also commonly known as crystals, will usually reduce as the body begins to heal. In order to maintain the benefits of the treatment, aftercare advice will be given and also information on what to expect after a reflexology treatment.

How often should I have treatment?
As often as you wish as this therapy brings about a sense of wellbeing from a physical, emotional and spiritual sense and will maintain a state of homeostasis. If the patient is receiving treatment for a particular condition, a short course of weekly treatments may be advised and maintenance treatments may be recommended on a monthly basis depending on each individual.
Regular care and attention is essential for healthy feet to help us stay active and mobile through correct footwear, hygiene and regular exercise and in so doing, taking a step in the right direction.
